The driver lacks performance optimizations and several extensions are currently broken. Not something I want to do but I've been waiting for AMD driver improvements for OpenGL since my old R9 270x GPU.Įdit: Fixed some typos and removed redundant repeated information (I sometimes do that unintentionally).Due to a buggy driver OpenGL will perform poorly on AMD GPUs. I don't plan on changing my GPU right now (5700 XT), but if AMD doesn't fix their OpenGL drivers by the time I do plan to upgrade my GPU, then AMD would have forced my hand to get an Nvidia GPU next time. The number of Minecraft players (for Java Edition) is very high, it should be a major focus to fix those drivers, but they constantly stop. With a Ryzen 3900X / 5900X that I plan to get (whatever is in stock when I can), I would like to have an all AMD build, but AMD completely ignores OpenGL drivers for Windows. I know it's because it's rendering everything that direction (like various Auto Sieves and Auto Hammers), even with walls up and I can't actually see them. While FPS starts fine, the more you build (a few things, not a lot) it would drop to like 10 to 30 FPS (for me) and feel stuttery just looking in specific directions. I like to play some modded like Stoneblock. Not something I would have wanted to do, but I would go with the one that gives me the best performance for MC. If I had known Minecraft performance would be bad (especially in modded), then I would have gone Green. Part of me is regretting getting the RX 5700XT I have now and not getting an RTX 2070S. At least we as a community can vote for it, and show that it is missed. Therefore, please add "improved OpenGL support" to the poll. It is going to take a very, very long time before OpenGL is long gone and forgotten, yet I feel AMD compares it to 3dfx's Glide API. As a comparison there are 96 Vulkan games. If you look at PC gaming Wiki, 1153 games are listed as being OpenGL games.
It is important when it comes to emulation, and it's probably the most used backend for scientific visualization, and you see it in lots of CAD software. I realize we have the Vulkan API, but the two APIs don't exactly compare 1:1 and OpenGL is very important for a huge amount of older games, and new games are still released using OpenGL. Even when I used the Intel iGPU I experienced way better OpenGL support.įor those wondering, the current poll can be seen here: Never in my wildest dreams would I have imagined it was this bad. As the title says, could you please add "improved OpenGL support" as a voting option? Personally I am very saddened by the lack of OpenGL support, coming from an Nvidia card.
